When water is going where it shouldn't, a calm, quick response can save thousands of dollars in damage. Keep this checklist handy โ and our number, 772-382-9590, in your phone.
1. Shut off the water
For a single fixture (toilet, sink, water heater), turn the shut-off valve right at that fixture clockwise to close it. For a major leak or burst pipe, go to your home's main shut-off valve and close it to stop all water to the house.
Know where your main shut-off is before an emergency happens. In Florida homes it's often near the water meter, in the garage, or on an exterior wall.
2. Kill the power if water is near electrical
If water is near outlets, appliances, or your electrical panel, shut off power to that area at the breaker โ but only if you can reach the panel safely and without standing in water. Your safety comes first.
3. Turn off the water heater
After the main water is off, switch off your water heater to prevent it from heating an empty tank. Set a gas unit to "pilot," or flip the breaker for an electric unit.
4. Contain and document
- โUse towels, buckets, and a mop to contain spreading water.
- โMove furniture and valuables away from the wet area.
- โTake photos and video for your insurance claim before you clean up.
5. Call a 24/7 emergency plumber
